December 7th, 2011: GRAPE SITUATION EFFECTS 2012 PRICES: Click Here  to view a press release from the Consortium of producers of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I. explaining the bad grape harvest in Italy (worst since 1948),  how it has effected the cost of raw materials for Balsamic Vinegar producers, and furthermore their prices for the New Year.

Besides the poor grape harvest in Italy, driving demand from other large consuming international countries is switching towards Europe due to low production and higher prices from large suppliers in the southern hemisphere that have supplied them previously. European countries (besides Italy) also have had poor results in their grape harvest, due to extended winter frosts  so the strong demand is towards an area with a low supply. This driving demand in particular towards Italy who again has had a low supply as well.

Finally besides grape harvest being negative all over Italy, Sicily, which is a large area of supply is starting with a bottom level supply as well due to a “Green harvest” initiative by the EU (this is where farmer’s receive monetary contribution to cut some of the grapes before being ripe in an effort to sustain pricing and protect the farmers who work to grow the grapes).

These driving factors will in turn effect pricing on all products produced with grape including; Wine, Vinegar, and of course Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I.
